I started shooting Lomography toy cameras during NY Fashion Week as a response to the prevalence of digital image capture. As an editor and trend forecaster, I aim to pursue the most forward concepts of beauty, at any cost. This is just one of the many techniques we need in order to redefine the beauty standards for contemporary men and women. As always, I’m interested to feature regular people doing amazing things, rather than famous people doing regular things.
Shooting film is one way I challenge myself to look in unexpected places. I think fotography and film photography offer deeper and more meaningful connections with both subjects and viewers, when compared to digital methods.
These images were shot with the Diana F+, using medium format film. Double and triple exposures on each frame seek to create unexpected patterns and shifting context. I scan the film and refrain from any Photoshop techniques beyond a basic, color balance. I don’t crop out the unexposed part of the frame. Instead, I see it as part of the image. So in essence, it’s an experiment about how many rules of photography I can bend and break, challenging some aspect of beauty to shine through the muddled and seemingly illogical techniques. The result is intended to feel like a fleeting memory, a warm hand on a soft cheek or a déjà vu that never really occurred.
