MEET…HAPPY SOCKS

Happy Socks, fresh from Sweden, are a breath of fresh air for the feet. Hand-finished, unisex and covering the entire color spectrum in uncommon combinations, from stripes to panels to solids, Happy Socks are quirky, cotton and cool.

It was a cold rainy day in Stockholm when two brazen boys — Mikael Söderlindh and Viktor Tell thought timing was right to start spreading happiness through beautiful and colorful socks. Happy Socks was born. The team searched far and wide for a top notch production factory and discovered a family-owned mill in Turkey that had been open for more than 30 years, making socks for the military. Happy Socks are made from a cotton blend on Italian looms and each toe is hand stitched to ensure a snug fit.

With Happy Socks, Söderlindh and Tell aimed to build a strong brand around a single, distinct product and simultaneously define the market for fashion socks. They were also eager for global distribution of a product with high volumes at low prices. In the current economic climate, their idea to market colorful and high quality, yet accessibly priced socks as a covetable fashion accessory could not have been timelier.

Brad Goreski picked up his first Vogue at the age of twelve and has been enthralled by the world of fashion ever since. Originally from the small Canadian town of Port Perry, Ontario, he has resided in LA for the past eight years.

During his summer breaks, while studying Art History at the University of Southern California, Goreski had the opportunity to intern at Vogue and W magazines in New York. Upon graduation, he was hired to be the West Coast assistant at Vogue – a dream come true.

While at Vogue, Goreski followed Rachel Zoe’s career and developed an admiration for her styling work and aesthetic. He first met Zoe at a Chanel dinner, and spent the next year attempting to get closer to the “Zoe Camp.” Persistence paid off when he landed a job with Zoe in January 2008. Having spent a tumultuous year proving his worth and struggling to keep up with Rachel’s styling associate, Taylor, Goreski is just beginning to feel secure in his position with Team Zoe.

With the second installment of Bravo’s docu-series ”The Rachel Zoe Project” premiering August 24th, it delves further into the inner workings of Team Zoe as they jet from coast to coast throwing charity auctions, attending store openings and laboring to find the perfect gowns to adorn the red carpet during award season. The new season includes some of the world’s most influential and respected designers including Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli, Diane Von Furstenberg and Matthew Williamson to name a few.

MEET…LESLEY ARFIN

Starting her career with an internship at Vice Magazine and eventually, in 2002, scribing her on column titled Dear Diary, Lesley Arfin has a downtown street vibe that is a force to be rekowned with. Contributing to such publications as Nylon, iD, America, Paper, Purple and Jalouse, Arfin acted as Editor in Chief of now defunct (R.I.P) indie scribe Missbehave.

Approached in 2007 by MTV to pen a book based on her editorial column - Dear Diary was immortalized in book form, and Arfin had good pal Chloe Sevigny write the books introduction. Documenting the trials and tribulations of an adolescent girl from the ages of 12 to 25, Arfin recounts her intense bout with heroin and reflects on her life as a young girl who  extensively dabbled in all things sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Fast forward a few years, this past summer for Arfin has proven to be more relaxing, and I got to chat with her about her influences, Chinese food, and her fear of being eaten by a shark.

While some might think posing as a bride and groom on the cover of an internationally recognized magazine might not be the best idea for a new romance - that thought didn’t cross Josephine De La Baume’s mind. As belle to Mark Ronsons beau, De La Baume and her man mocked a wedding on the July 2009 cover of France’s Jalouse publication. As she divides her time between Paris and New York, she is currently enrolled in Aldolfo Doring’s latest flick The Locust. She filled us in on her “real” age, her love for Mexico City and my interview made her hungry.

GUEST CONTRIBUTOR: JOHN BARTLETT

“When I received a call from Tim Gunn (Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne, Inc.) in late Fall of 2007, I was thrilled at the idea of designing for such a powerhouse in the industry.

With the newly branded “Claiborne by John Bartlett” label, I am able to incorporate great designer details, colors, and patterns, but offer them at very affordable prices. To me, it is a win-win opportunity. I house the Claiborne by John Bartlett collection alongside my own signature label “John Bartlett

In my retail space in the west village, the customer who typically buys JB is also the customer in many ways for the Claiborne brand. Both guys are into designer quality but with a “guy sensibility”.  This guy isn’t a fashionista who wants the skinniest jean and a shrunken boy blazer.  This is a man, who is confident in who he is and wants to look great, but still look like himself.

For Fall ‘09, the Claiborne by John Bartlett embraces iconic American sportswear.  For example,  I have re-engineered the traditional duffle coat and replaced toggles with horn snaps to make it more modern and cool. I also included a great new take on the aviator bomber with a more slimmed down shape and bright lining inside.  In general, the collection is a study of all things guy, argyles, corduroy blazers, beaten up leather moto jackets, and rugby shirts, all updated but still with a great nod to the past.”

From her education bound in Journalism to landing stints with Master-class-esque individuals such as Craig McDean and Glenn O’Brien, Natalie Joos has always been someone who has intrigued me.

She has undoubtedly created a name for herself in the international fashion scene by launching Natalie Joos Casting - THE casting agent who runs the gamut from editorial to music videos and everything in between. Notoriously known for standing out in the crowd and doing her job with impeccable ease and comfort - Joos has been recognized for her keen eye and her ability to match faces to brands with both skill and precision.

Recently landing Hugo Boss as a client - Joos and I recently caught up as she brought me into her  ”casting world”. Take a read below.
