HENRY HOLLAND…A BLACKBOOK

I had the chance to explore Henry Holland’s world - on HIS terms. Holland, recognized for his eclectic and bold designs - has evolved his design aesthetic from his recognizable graphic tees to a full-grown contemporary collection.  With his S/S2010 collection titled “Give To Me Your Leather Take From Me My Lace” - Holland was inspired by his two favorite moments in music and film - Axl Rose’s “November Rain” and the Roberts/Gere union in “Pretty Woman”.

Mr. Holland gave me the lowdown on his biggest vice (Vodka), the most overrated virtue (wealth), his favorite photographer (Rankin) and the worst trend of all time (Rubber leggings)!

It’s fun and witty - and provides an insight into the creative mind we like to call Henry Holland.

When he’s not traveling the globe with client Katy Perry - Mr. Johnny Wujek is creatively consulting on his roster of other clients. With a passion for photography (and outlandish get ups) - it is Wujek himself who has made Ms. Katy Perry recognized for her playful, humors, and often provocative sense of style. Recently returning from the Paris shows - Wujek, who is all about pushing the limits, spoke about a good Charles Dickens moment, the “midwest” in him, and his cardigan collection.

Lucien Pellat-Finet, also known as the “King of Cashmere” is known for his modernistic iconic symbols embedded within his luxurious line of cashmere sweaters, accessories, outerwear and swimming gear. From a “devilized” Mickey Mouse to an abundance of marijuana leaves, LPF knows that imagery, especially symbolistic pop culture references, enhance the buying appeal of cashmere. With his recent collaboration with Japanese artist Mr. (Mister), as well as opening his latest retail post in Osaka, Japan, I couldn’t be happier to present my latest one-on-one with the incomparable Lucien Pellat-Finet.

SPURR is one of the most hyped about new kids on the menswear block. With his SS10 collection presented during NY FW, his latest collection features a dynamic approach to menswear - infusing “an innovative use of color and romantic styling”. With his latest collection inspired by Helmut Newton photographs - I spoke with Mr. Simon Spurr and got the lowdown on excessive blackberry use, items every guy should have, and why he refuses to be labeled as a “denim brand”.

Nina Garduno is the female mastermind behind FREECITY - the ultra comfortable clothing line which has swept the nation due to their relaxed vibe, inspiring statements, and the perfect marriage of luxe with lounge. With September 11th playing a key role in the lines ideation and inception - Nina Garduno is the sole individual who is credited with creating one of my favorite lines. I was fortunate enough to chat with her - and learned about her travels as a teenager, her appreciation and support for upcoming talent, and why she hates the word “retail”. Check it out…

Robbie Spencer is the Menswear Fashion Editor at one of my favorite magazines - DAZED & CONFUSED. London-based Spencer has made a name for himself among the cutting-edge menswear editors, honing his skills and talent at Wallpaper, GQ, 10 and then finally ending up at Dazed. The “Spencer-Vision” is easily identifiable - boundary pushing while painting WAY outside of the lines. THE MALCOLM spoke to Robbie about what’s coming up for the next Dazed issue as well as why he calls himself a self-proclaimed blog-a-holic. Check it out…

Also - be sure to check out Robbie’s personal blog here.

International entrepreneur and nightlife fixture Richard Mortimer is most notable for his influential stamp on London nightlife. With his famed PonyStep parties reaching an all time high - Mortimer is hard at work doing what he does best - creating and re-creating innovative ways to reach a young, creative based audience.

While his online magazine PonyStep.com sprouted from his parties, Mortimer is currently working on a line of glasses with Linda Farrow as well as a limited edition CD in collaboration with Kitsune. Not to mention, his influential and highly publicized parties in both London and Paris.

Richard and I sat down and chatted about Pony…trot, “the kids”, and arseholes.

MEET…ARTIST/DESIGNER BRIAN WOOD

With a combination of vision and unrelenting drive, young designer Brian Wood is able to deliver collections that reflect his skill, ability and determination.  As a menswear designer he focuses on cut, construction, clever detailing, and the use of unique color palettes in his collections.

Wood believes that the design process should be about having fun, and this is captured in his light hearted offerings.  Wood’s design aesthetic is a fresh forward fusion of high-end and contemporary street fashion; a utilitarian ideology based on providing men with an alternative, but practical style of dress. His appreciation for cleverly intricate details and tailoring is consistent from season to season.

Brian Wood strives to push the creative envelope in menswear, while keeping his designs wearable and functional.
