Ever since I was a young, I’ve always loved sharing music. It got the the point where people would constantly bug me to make them mix CDs or tapes. This progressed. I made more friends. I got more requests for music.
Fast forward to August of 2007. I have a degree in interactive design/graphic design and live in Brooklyn now. I discovered a website called Hypem which you’re probably familiar with. Users upload tracks and make their own playlists. I wanted to combine this style of posting music into a blog format. I outlined the site in my head and designed the layout.
This is where I brought Chris on board. Chris and I met while we were attending Savannah College of Art and Design and ended up being roomates here in Brooklyn. I always appreciated his taste in music and design. We would frequently trade albums on AIM and his picks were always on point. Chris agreed to be part of the the project and designed the logo for me. If it wasnt for Chris, I don’t think this project would have succeeded. He picks up the slack for me when I slow down on posting.
Development took about 2 weeks. I made the site in flash because honestly I didnt know how to program anything else at the time. I made it super easy for us to post songs so we could keep up momentum and make sure people visit it everyday.
To be honest, I never expected our little music blog to take off like it has. The traffic is completely word of mouth for the most part which is pretty amazing. This month we’ve received about 20,000 hits and streamed almost a terabyte of data. Other than the US - we’ve been a big hit in South Korea and Turkey.
I’m currently in the process of finishing up the third version of the site, which is HTML driven this time. The new version has some awesome features I wasnt able to develop in flash. Hopefully I can make it cell phone compatible, but so far its not looking good - maybe an iphone app in the future.
This is a big crossroads for me with this project. It started really small and hasnt stopped gaining momentum since launch. Ideally, I would love to make revenue off the site, but after working out the numbers, it’ss almost not even worth it to have ugly banner ads for 1-2 thousand extra bucks a month. Were thinking about going the donate/merchandise route.
So yea, In short, I made the site so I could tell people to fuck off and goto my blog when they ask me for new music.
