Rough Luxe Hotel London is probably the first hotelier who pride themselves as being “half rough, half luxury”. Located right by Kings Cross Station - Rough Luxe is more rough-around-the-edges and less tightly polished. Described as looking at “luxury as part of time and not just as an object of consumption” - acclaimed designer Rabi Hage is responsible for the success of this notoriously busy London landmark. His vision is simple - he wanted every room to have the tangible texturized feeling of past years of various occupations embedded in every room of the hotel. Recession-friendly hotel THE ACE recently opened their doors to the public in New York’s NoMad area (North of Madison Square Park). With interior designs by Stephen Alesch of renowned Roman and Williams - these simply furnished rooms were designed to feel like a masculine-friendly retreat with simple furnishings and attention to detail. The Thompson LES is Jason Pomeranc’s 4th hotel in NYC. Located in the Lower East Side, conceptually designed by Ed Rawlings Architects, with interiors by Jim Walrod - this 141 room hotel features custom designed light-boxes above each bed by Lee Friendlander while the breathtaking pool displays an image of Andy Warhol, which was created by his confidant Gerard Malanga. While the hotel has an industrial design like feel - the art adoring the walls features some of the most prominent American artists. If you have the opportunity to stay in one of their luxurious rooms - do it! If not - check out Shang, the highly-hyped restaurant my fellow Torontonian Susur Lee. With additional Thompson Hotels slated to open in Toronto, San Juan and Seoul by 2011 - if Thompson LES is any indication of Pomeranc’s capabilities - I cant wait to see what he comes up with next.
