SPURR is one of the most hyped about new kids on the menswear block. With his SS10 collection presented during NY FW, his latest collection features a dynamic approach to menswear - infusing “an innovative use of color and romantic styling”. With his latest collection inspired by Helmut Newton photographs - I spoke with Mr. Simon Spurr and got the lowdown on excessive blackberry use, items every guy should have, and why he refuses to be labeled as a “denim brand”.

Launched in Fall 2006 as a denim capsule collection for Bergdorf Goodman - this was done alongside business partner Judd Nydes. How did the two of you meet? What do both of you bring to the design table?

Judd and I launched the business together with denim for Fall 2006. We had been good friends for a number of years and decided to try something outside of the comfort zone by starting our own line. We became business partners as we have very different, yet complimentary skill sets and experiences. Judd comes from a financial background whilst I come from a design background. I’d say that’s a clear definition of how our roles are also divided within the company.

Who is the SPURR gentleman? How would you describe the “SPURR Man”?

The SPURR man is modern, creative, confident and yet understated. He has strong sense of who he is, what he likes, what he stands for etc.

What do you think separates the SPURR line from other menswear labels out there?

SPURR offers a clearly designed, modern aesthetic that is wearable. The back bone of the collection is the quality, workmanship and the fit of the product. We offer the modern man a line of clothing for many wearing occasions that compliments the inner personality of the wearer.

How would you describe your aesthetic view point?

I think SPURR has one of the most European aesthetics of the new American designers. Being English, many of my reference points are British or European. I think SPURR offers a unique blend of English/American sensibility. My own aesthetic is somewhat minimal and modern but with an eclectic, vintage edge.

What started as a denim collection has now morphed into a full range of sportswear, suiting, ties, and bags. From its inception, is this where you saw the line going? How true to the original business model have you stayed?

We always wanted to be a full lifestyle men’s brand. And we are far from completing that task. When we started the company, denim sales were soaring and we thought it would be a great vehicle to get some traction in the market. But we didn’t want to get pigeon holed as a denim brand (not that there is anything wrong with that). I had quite some experience in other product categories and we wanted to utilize this, so we slowly started expanding the line. It also gave us the opportunity to take our time, identify and grow with our customer.

What are 5 items you think every male should have in their closet?

1. A tuxedo (Spend a little more and buy a good one)

2. A great Trench coat/ English Mackintosh

3. Pair of black lace up shoes (that will never go out of style)

4. An elegant umbrella (don’t under estimate the importance of having a great umbrella)

5. A pair of SPURR pipe jeans

What elements of English culture have influenced the SPURR design process?

Many elements of English culture have influenced me over the years. I have spent many years of my career in flea markets all over Europe sifting through piles of vintage military clothes looking for new details, and understanding garment construction. I have spent countless hours at historical costumiers like Angels in London absorbing the different eras that made London a fashion hub. Other things have been more subtle, like my father having always worn slim lapel suits from the 60’s even during the 70’s. Ultimately I think all of these elements whether conscious or sub conscious have helped shape my taste level and aesthetic.

In your opinion - who are some of the best dressed guys that have caught your eye recently?

Milo Ventimiglia has great personal style- he really takes care in his appearance. but then again he is also one of the most considerate and charming men out there also.

I never leave home without….?

My Blackberry. Unfortunately, I carry work everywhere I go. The Italian, NY and LA time zones mean that I’m normally on call for 15 hours a day. At least the Blackberry allows me to deal with some of the 200 daily e-mails whilst I’m out and about.

What’s up next for SPURR?

The next 12 months for us will be demanding. We looking to strengthen the companies infrastructure and to expand distribution both domestically and most importantly internationally.
