A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…JAMIE RICHARDS - MONOCHROME MAGAZINE
Test User • 10.05.2009 • ONE ON ONE
Jamie Richards is the founder and Editor in Chief of Monochrome Magazine, by far my favorite editorial discovery of 2009. With a penchant for style and a roster of editorial features ranging from Scott Schuman to Christian Lacroix - Richards has created a modern magazine that based on their premier issue, doesn’t seem to be fading anytime soon.A front row fixture in his own right, Richards took us through a recent day in his life…photographing his encounters every step of the way…

Thanks to my Blackberry alarm, I wake up with enough time to get a few things done before I hop onto the train to London. I make sure my Blackberry is charged enough to manage me sending hundreds of emails on the train to Paris PR’s to request invites for Monochrome Magazines’ Rodolphe Nantas (but I put my charger in my bag as luckily the Business Class train carriage usually has plug sockets next to the seats)

9.00am
I finally arrive in London, and I first head to one of my favourite bookstores, Artwords on Rivington Street in Shoreditch. I leave with Purple Fashion Magazine #12 and the Proenza Schouler edition of A Magazine (which I’ve been meaning to get for a while now, but it was worth the wait) After I left Artwords, I headed over to Hoxton Street to meet my friend Mavi in her apartment…

Whats in my bag? Purple Fashion Magazine #12, a Yashica 108 SLR, and my Blackberry.

I arrive at Mavi’s, and wait for my friend, artist Matthew Stone to finish getting ready before heading over to his studio. Its amazing waiting at Mavi’s, her apartment is amazing - full of loads of things you could stare at for ages, her magazine collection is super too. I left her a bag of old Vogue Italia’s as she is Italian, as a gift on her desk, but before I leave… I flick through a couple of her magazines to give me a dose of vitamin-inspiration.

At 10, I arrive with Matthew Stone at his studio, where I met Karley Sciortino, and two other guys (Jordan and Louise), Matthew took a few photos of us for his artwork which was really xtra-cool! Once I left his studio, we noticed the rather amazing Dazed car ready for London Fashion Week!

I interview Kim Jones for the Monochrome Magazine website, Dunhill was without a doubt my favourite out of all the shows I attended during Paris Menswear S/S 10, it was perfect, Kim Jones’ theme of ‘faded futurism’ couldn’t be any more inspiring…

I quickly head to Monocle Magazines mini store on George Street in London, it was closed - but luckily there was a ‘back in 15 minutes sign’ - but I would have managed with waiting an hour because the store is amazing. I left with a Brandbook x Monocle grey notebook because… well… you can never have to many notebooks, right? I also bought the latest issue of Monocle, which, if you buy from the store, comes nicely wrapped up!

About an hour and a half later, I’m back home, and I find waiting in my mailbox the Balmain Homme Fall / Winter 2009 lookbook featuring Clement Chabernaud. I have to pick my favourite images to request them in HQ to use on the Monochrome Magazine website, which turned out as a rather tricky task considering all of the images were equally as amazing, but with the help of Rodolphe I managed to bring it down to 3 images…

2pm
I grab a quick bite to eat, and refuel with a ‘Delo’ bought a few weeks from Colette when I was in Paris. I pick the energy Delo, which screws on the top of my water bottle, mixes, then is ready to drink and ready help give me the energy I need!

I’m taking a little break, so I decide get a burst of inspiration, so I go to my favourite magazines, supplements, books and images to help. I flick through Fantastic Man, Purple Fashion, Acne Paper, A Magazine, V, Purple Sexe, Le Petit Nicolas, Lookbooks and 30,000 years of art for inspiration, and end up with a few rough ideas for future editorials for the first issue of Monochrome Magazine.

3.15pm
After getting a few ideas for editorials after flicking through books, magazines and lookbooks, I open the package given to me by Roger, [from Major models] when we met in Paris during Menswear Spring/Summer 2010 fashion week. The selection is amazing, and even better, Roger sends me images of any new boys at Major direct to my mail inbox. I will sure have no problem finding models in Paris and London for the first editorials for the launch issue…

After making a few emails, and phone calls, I finally take a rest before I head back to London for the Jean Charles de Castelbajac S/S 10 show to launch his JC/DC diffusion line. What better to use than my Caperino & Peperone candles from Colette (complete with equally cool Monocle Magazine matches from the store in London!) and a quick listen to my favourite tracks from the Colette N˚9 CD and Hooked on Colette (Time out!)

5.15pm
I quickly work on a collaboration for Monochrome with dTours, a new Russian fashion newspaper. I was asked to select some of my favourite pictures from Haute Couture Week and Mens Fashion Week and write the story behind each image I took, naturally I had to include the one of Leonor Scherrer which I took before the Givenchy Haute Couture show…

I arrive back in London for the JC/DC show, which was worth the wait. It was his first time showing in London and will hopefully not be the last! With live music from the Wave Machines, the evening turned out to be a lot of fun, but I made sure I didn’t head home too late so I was still ready to work the next day
