Sydney Mamane, Designer and owner of KIN started out as a stylist, and within a couple of years moved into the film industry working in the wardrobe department where he taught himself elementary skills in sewing, cutting, draping, and pattern drafting.

After 6 solid years in film he took a position apprenticing with an experienced tailor, which solidified his expertise in tailoring, cutting, and draping. Upon leaving his apprenticeship he started a custom bespoke denim and suiting business run out of a small Toronto based studio.

In 2005 Sydney opened a retail store on Toronto’s Queen Street West.  He spent the last 4 years meticulously perfecting and developing his own label and is now set to launch Kin in Autumn 2010 with a complete menswear collection.

THE JAMES NEW YORK, A Modern Vision of Classic Hospitality, to OPEN IN SOHO Summer 2010

Summer 2010 brings the recent addition of one of Chicago’s most loved hotels, The James, to New York City. Located on the SW corner of Grand and Thompson – The James NYC will offer 114 guestrooms with unobstructed views of Manhattan. Designed by the Office for Design and Architecture (ODA) in collaboration with Perkins Eastman and The James Design team, The James NYC will feature an urban garden, and a stunning rooftop pool deck and bar, complete with 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline.

In homage to the creative neighborhood it calls home, The James New York will feature a mix of local artists, both prominent and up-and-coming. This program is reflective of the brand’s commitment to the arts and is an extension of its sister property’s extensive cultural partnerships in Chicago.

A symbol of Canadian childhood, Club Monaco’s legendary Crest Sweatshirt has been re-immortalized by Club Monaco’s international headquarters. A former wardrobe staple, this model halted production more than 10 years ago when the company took a turn to a more sophisticated urban look. Back specifically for Canada (where CM was born and raised), the design team has perfected the perfect wash and fit – and created a 2010-hooded sweatshirt. They are available as of today in limited qualities – so for those who want to re-live their youth – RUN.

Diwon presents their Fall/Winter 2010 collection mixing bespoke suiting’s and leather jackets, creating an immaculate collection that brings fall’s nonchalance to reality. With clean cuts and refined detailing, a fine line is discovered between weathered functionality and individual identity. The most extravagant of materials and the greatest detailed construction, such as cashmere lined calfskin zip-up and nappa accented wool suitings, create the foundation for modern pieces that are referentially classic.

I’m loving the Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil (platinum plated or sterling silver) and Graf von Faber-Castell Intuition Pen (fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint) that I just spotted. These simple yet elegant instruments are durable and come in an ideally compact form – that make a statement about understated elegance. Not too flashy – but a good investment.
